Hui Yee To Donate Organs
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- Fourteen-year-old Tee Hui Yee who is anxiously waiting for a donor over the past year and has only another year before her mechanical heart stops functioning, has registered as an organ donor herself.
"I will donate my eyes, bones, skin and kidneys when I am not around," she told reporters at the National Heart Institute (IJN) here today.
She said she knew how hard it was to find a replacement heart because the country lacked donors especially among youths and being a donor herself, she hoped other people would not have to bear similar difficulties.
"My organs can give more a meaningful life to others in need when I am not around," she said.
Hui Yee became the country's second recipient of a mechanical heart after undergoing an operation to insert a pulsatile ventricular assist device (PVAD) at the IJN on Sept 29 last year.
The PVAD supports a weak heart by pumping blood to a patient's whole body but can only last for two years.
The first recipient of the mechanical heart is Mohd Fikri Nor Azmi who is now 17. He had the device inserted in July 2005 and already received a new heart.
Asked whether she was confident of receiving a new heart suitable for her, Hui Yee smiled and said she would wait for the day when the doctors tell her that they have found one.
There were several donors before, she said, but the hearts were either too big or too small or of a different blood type.
She hoped that one day, she would return to Sekolah Rendah Convent Batu Pahat and sit for the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah examination.
Hui Yee left the school three years ago due to her condition. Accompanying her at the IJN over the past year is her mother, Dina Batok Bambum.
Earlier, Hui Yee and about 150 patients at the IJN received Hari Raya goodies from Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
